The Diptyque story began in Paris, at 34 Boulevard St-Germain, with three friends driven by the same creative passion. Christiane Gautrot, interior decorator, Desmond Knox-Leet, painter, and Yves Coueslant, theatre administrator and set designer. Previously designing fabrics and wallpaper for Liberty and Sanderson, together they teamed up in 1961 and opened a store at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain to showcase their fabric designs.
With their unique taste, they gradually transformed the store into a world of its own. A chic bazaar offering a fascinating variety of unexpected items, unique to Paris, which the trio brought back from their travels. “Merchants of everything”, their choices had no limits other than their insatiable curiosity and keen sense of beauty.
In 1968, the company created its first Eau de Toilette called L’Eau that was based on a 16th century pot-pourri and a clove pomander. This was followed by other creations which came as Eau de Toilette, perfumed soap or body care range, as well as rare and sophisticated Toilet Vinegar. Diptyque has been producing a refined collection of eau de toilette with a highly distinctive signature for over 40 years. Inspired by nature and travel – the forgotten taste of a particular fruit, the headiness of a tree resin, an exotic spice, sweet and delicately scented flowers, the fragrant depths of a balm and subtle notes of wood.
Sublime substances that dominate, together with surprising accords, give Diptyque its distinctive, unmistakable personality, like an invitation to freedom off the beaten tracks. Throughout its history, Diptyque has offered an
unusual olfactory landscape. Today, guided by this rich heritage, Diptyque perpetuates a creation of fragrances without reference to the masculine or the feminine.
