Gritti - Privée - Alvise
With this fragrance, we are moving along the narrow, shadowy streets, le calle strette, of 16th century Venice. Alvise Gritti, one of the most interesting personalities in both Ottoman and Western European history, lives in this time, in Venice. He was born the son of the Doge of Venice in Istanbul and of a noble Turkish lady. Considered a great and eloquent diplomat, Alvise mediated between the Turkish Sultan and European countries on a variety of important political and economic issues.
At this time, in Venice, there was a thriving exchange of goods going on between Byzantium and Venice. Every day, ships groaning with precious spices such as cinnamon bark and cardamom would dock in Venice. The docks would be scented heavily with these spices and also the large sacks of Mysore sandalwood from India that had arrived with the spices. The wonderful aroma of leather satchels filled to the brim with dark, sticky vanilla pods from Madagascar mingled with the heavy, punding fragrance wafting from closed tins full of deer muck grains.
This wealth of exotic aromas inspired the alchemists of the time to mix up potions and lotions that referenced these smells. And Alvise is a fragrance that pays homage to the wonderful aromas coming from these exotic cargoes too - a tribute to both the splendor of the Doge, the fantastic wealth of Venice itself, and the exoticism of foreign trade.
In the topnotes, the spicy fireworks of Cistus, cardamom, and cinnamon are complemented by a fresh, piercingly green bergamot. The dense leather notes are reminiscent of a saloon. Caramel whiskey notes mix smoothly with vanilla and musk to soften the harsh leathery notes and provide a layer of soft creaminess. Patchouli and vetiver in the base add an earthy, green exoticism of their own, a rugged sensuality that speaks to hunters of precious woods in far away forests. A buttery sandalwood mingles with smoky, resinous styrax to provide a deep, oriental foundation for the scent, and whispers the name of India in the crowed calle of Venice. A potent and multifaceted fragrance that will awaken a wistfulness and longing for travel in the wear.
