Naxos! Unless you happen to be a Sicilian (or an accomplished history or geography teacher), the first thing you may think of when you hear this name is the Greek island of the same name in the Aegean Sea.
However, there is (or was) a second location of this name - on the Mediterranean island of Sicily. A noble fragrance from the Italian perfume house Xerjoff owes its name to it: Xerjoff Naxos. Also known as XJ 1861 Naxos or Xerjoff XJ 1861 Naxos ...
In any case, it is a remarkable fragrance, suitable for women as well as for men longing for the Mediterranean Sea.
How Naxos came to Sicily
A name could hardly sound more Greek than “Naxos”. Nevertheless, the settlement, after which the Eau de Parfum Naxos by Xerjoff (a.k.a. Xerjoff XJ 1861 Naxos) is named, was not in sunny Greece, but in (likewise sun-drenched) southern Italy - on Sicily.
It was an ancient city that no longer exists today. However, the name of the village Giardini-Naxos on the east coast of Sicily still refers to the historical settlement that was once to be found in the same place.
“Once” - that means: about 2 ½ millennia ago. Because as early as 403 BC, the coastal city was destroyed by Dionysius I, the powerful tyrant of Syracuse.
But how did a town with such an ancient Greek name come to Italy?
The Sicilian settlement was the first Greek colony in Sicily. Founded by residents of the Greek city of Chalkis around 734 BC, the new town was named after the famous Greek island in the Aegean Sea.
Based on this choice of name, it can be assumed that earlier residents of the eponymous island were among the first settlers.
But since the Greek colony in Sicily opposed against Syracuse in a coalition with Athens in the fifth century BC, its fate was finally sealed after just a few centuries of existence:
From its destruction in 403 BC by troops from Syracuse, the city never recovered. After all: Former residents found a new home in the nearby Tauromenium (today: Taormina).
Today, some archaeological excavation finds (including remains of the city wall at that time) still testify to the former settlement of Greek colonists in Sicily. The rest is history.
