Parfums de Marly

Parfums de Marly: Noble horses, precious perfumes

The premium fragrances by Parfums de Marly are an extraordinary fusion of the worlds of noble perfumes and elegant thoroughbred horses.

The history of Parfums de Marly goes back to the 18th century and began at the court of Louis XV. He did not only devour fine perfumes, but horses too. In 1739 he commissioned the sculptor Guillaume Coustou the Elder to make horse statues from Carrara marble. The result is the now world-famous group of statues of the "horse-tamers" (Les Chevaux de Marly), which were inspired by the huge horse-tamer figures on the Roman Piazza Quirinale. The scene depicts a wildly rearing horse that is being tamed by a stable boy.

In 1745 the horse statues were established at the horse trough in the park of the royal castle of Marly-le-Roi. The originals of these marble works of art can be admired today in the Louvre in Paris. Replicas made of cement can be found on the Place de la Concorde, where they adorn the entrance to the Champs-Élysées.

La cour parfumé

Louis XV was not only an admirer of elegant horses, but also a real lover of fragrances. His mistress Madame de Pompadour regularly ordered a large selection of perfumes and King Louis - blessed with a great sense of what we nowadays call "room scenting" - commanded to scent his rooms with one new fragrance each day. Clothes and furniture were also generously perfumed. During his reign, the issue “perfume” was so important that his court was sometimes called “la cour parfumé” - the perfumed court.

The premium fragrances for women and men by Parfums de Marly bring together two topics that don't seem to have much in common at first glance: perfumes and horses. But if you look beyond the surface at the characters, perfume and horses have more in common than you might think. The magnificent, proud hoofed animals with all their majestic elegance, passionate temperament and natural grace are a great source of inspiration for the creation of noble perfume compositions.

The most exquisite women's and men's fragrances by Parfums de Marly

And the perfumers of Parfums de Marly have drawn from this source of inspiration with both hands! Above all, the noble horse breed of the English Thoroughbred is celebrated with the fragrances of Parfums de Marly according to all rules of the perfumers' art: From the legendary racehorses Herod and Pegasus over the thoroughbred ancestors CarlisleLayton and Delina to Darley Arabian, the progenitor of almost all horses of the English Thoroughbred breed alive today.

The Exclusif variants of Parfums de Marly are also particularly popular: Pegasus ExclusifLayton Exclusif and Delina Exclusif.

But other horse breeds are also honored by Parfums de Marly, such as the Lipizzaner, known as the oldest cultural horse breed, or the Shagya Arabs, which have their origins in Austria-Hungary at the end of the 18th century. There is also a particular focus on the noble breed of thoroughbred Arabian blood, which goes back to five founding families, to which Parfums de Marly has even dedicated its own premium perfume series called "Arabian Breed": Oajan, Kuhuyan, Habdan and Hamdani stand for big names and chapters in thoroughbred Arabian horse history.

Pegasus: The best horse in the stable

Undoubtedly one of the most prominent perfume creations among the de-Marly perfumes is the men's fragrance Pegasus. The premium perfume is inspired by the passion of the famous horse of the same name, born in 1784, which almost everyone knew at that time and won many horse races. The gentleman's fragrance opens with notes of fruits, woods, and spices. Essences of jasmine, lavender, and bitter almond flow in its heart - over a deep base of vanilla, amber, and sandalwood.

Parfums de Marly brilliantly managed the exciting balancing act between historic horse stable and modern perfume laboratory. And of course, you don't have to be a specialist in horse breeding to love the selection of fine perfume treasures from Parfums de Marly. All you need is a fine nose - and a good sense of sublime beauty and nobility ...

Château de Marly - a pleasure palace for the Sun King

Until the 17th century, Marly was just one town among many others in the Paris region. However, the rather ordinary existence came to an end when "Sun King" Louis XIV decided to make Marly the location of a royal summer residence. The extensive construction work for the pleasure and hunting palace Château de Marly began in the spring of 1679 and lasted for about six years. The design of the palace complex was the result of a collaboration between French baroque architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart and the first royal court painter Charles Le Brun.

In 1686 King Louis XIV, together with a handpicked entourage, moved into the château for the first time. From then on, pomp and glamor, courtly nobility, and royal glory shaped Marly's character. And Marly became the royal domicile “Marly-le-Roi” - a prestigious name that the municipality in the western urban area of ??the capital of France still bears today.

The noble palace complex was characterized by a walled park with large fountains, water features and waterspout fountains, a horse trough, and a total of twelve pavilions in which the king's guests were accommodated. The “Machine of Marly”, which has been personally inaugurated by King Louis XIV in 1684, was also world-famous at the time. It was a large hydraulic pumping system. This pumped river water from the nearby Seine river into the palace gardens of Marly in order to supply the fountains there with water.

The palace served as a place of retreat for the king, where life was more casual than at the court of Versailles with its strict protocol. "I made", Louis XIV once declared, "Versailles for my court, Trianon for my family - and Marly for my friends". And even if the great time of the château was undoubtedly under the reign of the "Sun King", his successors in office, the kings of France Louis XV and Louis XVI, liked to use the castle as a domicile, too.

Parfums de Marly: Noble fragrance creations

The luxury perfume label Parfums de Marly was founded in 2009 by Julien Sprecher. The noble fragrance creations for women and men celebrate the life and passion that once shaped the castle life with its noble horses. “I wanted,” says perfume label founder Julien Sprecher, “to build an Haute-Perfumery Maison where tradition matches the present.” Using the best essences - sometimes rare and always noble - the French premium perfume house evokes the elegance of that era, fills it with new life ... and combines it with a modern vision.
