The game of chess and love! In Marostica in northern Italy in 1454, the daughter of the lord of the castle beguiled two noblemen who asked for her hand in marriage. Where tradition would have called for a duel, the wise lord of the castle suggested a bloodless way to determine a winner. A game of chess was to decide who would get the hand of his daughter Lionora. Vieri da Vallonara emerged victorious from this game of chess played with live pieces in front of the castle. He became Lionora's husband, while his former opponent Rinaldo D'Angarano eventually married Lionora's younger sister Oldrada.
