Keep reading for an essential guide to the enigmatic Monsieur Kurkdjian and his brand of olfactory creations.

Who Is Francis Kurkdjian?

Let's start by taking a look at the man behind the brand, Francis Kurkdjian. Born in Paris, France, in 1969, Francis grew up in an Armenian household. He was enamored with ballet and piano from a young age but became fixed on the idea of being a perfumer by the age of 14 or 15.

Kurkdjian was heavily influenced by his sister's perfume collection. While she admired the bottles, he was enthralled by their contents.

He went on to study at ISIPCA, Paris's renowned perfume and cosmetics school, founded by Jean-Jacques Guerlain. It was here that he developed his craft, having no family history of perfume-making. He would then become associated with Quest Original and enroll in further studies at the Institut Supérieur de Marketing du Luxe.

By the age of 25, Kurkdjian would make his name by creating Le Mâle, the first aftershave for Jean Paul Gaultier. This scent remains a best-seller, and the iconic teal bust has Francis Kurkdjian to thank for its fame.

Kurkdjian would go on to lend his talent to the likes of Dior, Versace, Armani, Elie Saab, and Yves Saint Laurent.

In 2004, Francis Kurkdjian would meet Ernst & Young executive Marc Chaya. Just five years later in 2009, the two would reveal Maison Francis Kurkdjian.

Kurkdjian was awarded the prestigious Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres award in 2008 by the French Minister for Culture.

How Did Maison Francis Kurkdjian Come About?

The Kurkdjian perfumes we know and love today are borne out of a collaboration between Kurkdjian and Chaya, who upon meeting at a Jean Paul Gaultier show in 2004, realized they were both aspiring for something more from their jobs. One of MFK's best-loved fragrances is Aqua Universalis. As with all his perfumes, Francis Kurkdjian believes in the story of the fragrance: the name, the bottle, the concept, and of course the scent.
