There were magnificent instruments of nautical navigation - made from materials such as wood and metal, the craftsmen would mix rough sea salt into the crevices to season them and toughen them up. These masterpieces of the 18th century secured the superiority of the British fleet at sea.
Lignum Vitae is a scent that pays homage to a way of life at sea, where survival often depended on the availability of sea biscuits, sea salt, limes and lemons to stop scurvy, and these strange little metal instruments...
