After over four decades creating iconic fragrances for the world’s greatest luxury brands – including Alien for Thierry Mugler, La Vie est Belle for Lancôme, and Portrait of a Lady for Frédéric Malle – Dominique Ropion founded his own brand to express his artistic vision without constraints.
The Story Behind the Brand
Born in 1955 into a family deeply rooted in the French perfume industry, Ropion’s extraordinary career began at the renowned Roure perfumery school in Grasse. At just 27, he created Ysatis for Givenchy (1984), which became a timeless classic. His accolades speak volumes: the Lifetime Achievement Perfumer Award (2019), the title of Master Perfumer (2018), and the French cultural honor Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2012).
The founding of Aphorismes embodies Ropion’s conviction that perfume is an “aesthetic message” capable of expressing identity and personality. “As a free man who composes perfumes, I wanted to take a different approach,” he explains his vision, which breaks with traditional norms and explores new olfactory territories.
The Philosophy: Fragrance as Intimate Language
Each fragrance in the collection is conceived as an olfactory aphorism – a concise, powerful statement that distills an essential truth about its fragrance family.
