Vilhelm Parfumerie understands itself as an olfactory art studio where past and present merge into a unique harmony. Founded by Jan Ahlgren, a Swedish model and handbag designer, the brand bears the name of his grandfather – a charismatic figure who shaped Ahlgren’s appreciation for classic aesthetics and the glamour of the early 20th century.
The Story:
The journey of Vilhelm Parfumerie began with a historical inspiration: Jan Ahlgren read about Parisian glove makers of the 17th and 18th centuries who perfumed their leather gloves. This tradition awakened in him the desire to give his own leather bags an olfactory dimension. What began as an experiment evolved into a passion – and eventually into an independent fragrance line that came to life in 2015.
Through his encounter with New York perfumer Jérôme Épinette, who had already worked for Byredo, a new world opened for Ahlgren. Together they created fragrances that went far beyond the original idea – pure olfactory compositions that tell stories and awaken emotions.
The Philosophy:
Vilhelm Parfumerie moves within a creative tension: between past and present, between imagination and reality, between glamour and elegance, between New York and Paris. Each fragrance emerges as the result of a comprehensive creative process involving artists, aesthetes, and perfumers – a rare connection of vintage and new that sparks recognition without being predictable.
The brand understands itself as a library of stories, where each fragrance recreates a moment into which one can dive. From memories of childhood summers in a seaside cabin to visions of early 1900s Paris – each creation invites a journey through time and space.
The Craftsmanship:
Despite its Swedish name and New York roots, all fragrances are created in Paris, in collaboration with renowned French perfumers such as Jérôme Épinette, Bertrand Duchaufour, and Marc-Antoine Corticchiato. The brand works with fragrance manufacturers like Technicoflor and Robertet, both of which have their roots in Grasse and control the entire chain from raw material cultivation through harvest to extraction.
The flacons themselves are works of art: designed by Pierre Dinand, they present themselves in heavy spun glass, adorned with a saffron yellow label – an allusion to a piece of Bakelite that Ahlgren discovered at a Parisian flea market. This visual identity connects nostalgia with contemporary aesthetics.
